A Study on the Development and Evaluation Parenting skills improvement program of women with Mental Illness

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a parenting skill improvement program for women with mental illness. In order to improve the practicality of the program, it was composed of contents such as understanding the parenting attitude and communication skill training on the basis of the previous research review. And we referred to program experience that had been performed in the Daejeon Mental Health Welfare Center for 2 years. The program was developed in total of 10 sessions, and the participants were recruited from the Daejeon Mental Health Welfare Center. Also, we compared pre - post - test changes between experiment group and control group to verify program effectiveness. The effects of the program were measured by changes in parenting efficacy and parent-child communication ability. In addition, we analyzed the qualitative data of the participants' experience and feelings. The results of the study showed that the participants' parenting efficacy was improved at a statistically significant level. Parent-child communication ability was improved, but it was not statistically significant. After joining the program they recognized the necessity of child discipline and got confidence to improve parent-child relationship. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that the development of preventive intervention strategies to promote the improvement of parenting skills of women with mental illness and to minimize the negative impacts on their children.
